Almeria private tours and shore excursions
Founded in AD 955 by the caliph Abd ar-Rahman III of Cordoba, Almería quickly evolved into one of the wealthiest and largest ports in Moorish Spain, serving as the primary base for the Umayyad fleet. The streets of Almería bustled with merchants hailing from Syria, France, Egypt, and Italy, who arrived to purchase glass, marble, silk, and ceramics from Al-Andalus.
However, during the Christian occupation from 1147 to 1157, the city gradually lost its trading prominence, yet it remained a significant Moorish center until its conquest by the Catholic Monarchs in 1489.
Consequently, Almería experienced a swift decline. By 1658, the population had dwindled to just 500 inhabitants, a downturn attributed to severe earthquakes, the expulsion of Andalucía's Muslim community, and destructive raids by Barbary pirates.
In the late 20th century, fortunes shifted positively as the agriculture and tourism sectors began to thrive in the surrounding region.
