Embark on this 170 km day trip from Almeria to Granada, where we will explore the magnificent Alhambra palace and its stunning courtyards, originally constructed for the last Moorish Emirs of Spain during the Nasrid dynasty.
Following the Christian reconquest by the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, in 1492, parts of the Alhambra palace were repurposed for the Christian Monarchy's use.
In 1527, their grandson Charles V, who held the title of Holy Roman Emperor and governed much of Europe, commissioned the construction of a palace that was integrated within the Alhambra and the ancient fortifications of the Nasrid Palaces.
However, for centuries, the Alhambra fell into neglect and suffered significant damage at the hands of Napoleon's troops. It wasn't until the 19th century that the Alhambra was rediscovered by European and American scholars and travelers, notably Washington Irving, who penned his work, "Tales of the Alhambra," during his time there.
Today, the Alhambra Palace stands as Spain's most visited tourist destination, showcasing the country's rich Moorish heritage spanning over 700 years, along with its remarkable Islamic architecture—the most extraordinary examples outside of the Islamic world.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Alhambra continues to inspire countless songs, dances, and narratives.
