Information about Casablanca

The story begins with the Phoenicians establishing a modest trading post in the vicinity of Anfa during the 6th century BC. By the 7th century AD, Anfa had emerged as a regional capital under the Barghawata, a confederation of Berber tribes. In 1188, the Almohads laid waste to Anfa, but seventy years later, the Merenids took control of the area.

As the early 15th century unfolded, the port became a refuge for smugglers and pirates. The threat posed by the pirates of Anfa escalated significantly towards the end of the century, prompting the Portuguese to dispatch over 50 ships and 10,000 men to eliminate them, resulting in widespread devastation in Anfa. Nevertheless, local tribes persisted in their attacks on trade routes, inciting a second Portuguese assault in 1515. Ultimately, sixty years later, the Portuguese returned and established a permanent presence, erecting fortifications and renaming the port Casa Branca (White House).

In 1755, the Portuguese abandoned their colony following an earthquake that severely compromised the fortification walls of Casa Branca. Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdullah resettled and fortified Casa Blanca, but it never regained its previous significance. By 1830, the population had dwindled to a mere 600 inhabitants.

During the mid-1800s, as Europe prospered, interest in Morocco surged for its supplies of wool and grain. The fertile lands surrounding Casablanca soon began to supply all European markets, attracting traders back to the city. The merchants from Spain rebranded the city Casablanca, and at the dawn of the 20th century, the French constructed an artificial harbor.

The surge in trade ushered in prosperity for Casablanca, yet the growing European influence also sparked resentment. In 1907, tensions flared when Europeans desecrated a Muslim cemetery. The French quickly seized this opportunity, dispatching troops to suppress the unrest, while a French warship bombarded the town. By 1912, Casablanca had become part of the newly established French protectorate.
