Information about  Marrakesh

For centuries, Marrakesh has stood as a desert oasis, a military stronghold, a center of spirituality, and a playground for sultans. It ranks among Morocco’s most remarkable cities, starting humbly as a watering hole for local Berber tribes. Initially a distant outpost, it transformed into the city of Marrakesh in 1062 A.D. under the leadership of the Almoravid Berber chief Youssef bin Tashufin.

Under Tashufin’s influence, the city flourished. A mosque was constructed, and Marrakesh emerged as the capital of the Almoravid Empire. During the Almohad period, it evolved into a luxurious Islamic metropolis and swiftly became a hub of commercial power.

Referred to as the “red town,” Marrakesh boasts a distinctive Kasbah wall encircling its medina.

In the 13th century, the Merenids overthrew the Almoravid Empire and took control of Marrakesh, leading to a decline that saw the city overshadowed by Fez.

During this time, Marrakesh experienced significant neglect. However, after over 300 years, in 1522, the Saadians took charge of Morocco. By then, Marrakesh lay in ruins, but in 1551, the Sultan designated it as the new capital of the Saadian kingdom. The flourishing sugar trade provided funds for restoration, prompting Mohammed Al Mahdi to revitalize Marrakesh’s former splendor.

This era saw the construction of grand structures, including the Al Bedi Palace, and a remarkable surge in Moroccan craftsmanship.

Upon Morocco's independence in 1956, the city blossomed into a vibrant hub for artists and cultural activity. More than fifty years on, Marrakesh continues to be a significant city, celebrated for its rich cultural heritage that draws visitors from around the globe.
