Information about Porto

Porto, originally a pre-Roman settlement known as Calle or Portus Cale, has historical records indicating its establishment in 417. Throughout the centuries, it fell under the governance of various rulers, including the Suevi, Goths, and Moors.

The city’s significant commercial activities spurred rapid development, leading to the replacement of the ancient medieval walls with the new Ferdinand wall in the 14th century.

During the “Age of Discoveries,” Porto and Portugal assumed a crucial role in Europe. The city became a prominent trading hub and, in the 15th century, emerged as the foremost shipbuilding port in the country.

The 17th century marked a period of substantial growth for Porto, largely driven by the burgeoning wine industry. This era witnessed remarkable development and considerable artistic transformations, reaching its zenith in the 18th century.

Porto boasts a rich tradition of advocating for human civil rights, exemplified by its residents who withstood a protracted siege by royalist forces from 1832 to 1833. The sacrifices made by those who supported the Constitutional Chart were instrumental in securing victory for the Liberal cause.

For all these reasons, Porto is hailed as one of the most remarkable cities in northern Portugal and rightfully earned the designation of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you have a larger group, we can provide private Coaches and Minibuses  for all your Porto day trips or shore excursions.
