Nerja, located along the coastline approximately 150 kilometers from Almería, marks the eastern edge of Málaga's Costa del Sol. Once a quaint fishing village, it has now grown into a vibrant town with a population exceeding 22,000.
At the heart of Nerja lies the breathtaking Balcón de Europa, or "Balcony of Europe," a stunning promenade that stretches along the edge of a dramatic cliff, formerly the site of a grand Moorish castle. Visitors are treated to expansive panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, dotted with charming coves and beaches, all set against a mesmerizing backdrop of soft blue mountains.
However, the true gem of Nerja is undoubtedly its remarkable caves, situated just three kilometers from the town center. These caves house archaeological wonders, including paintings that date back over 20,000 years and other prehistoric artifacts. One of the cavernous spaces has been ingeniously converted into a concert hall, hosting numerous performances throughout the summer months.
Just seven kilometers north of Nerja lies the picturesque pueblo blanco of Frigiliana, perched high on a mountain ridge and offering breathtaking views of the sea. Recognized as the 'prettiest village in Andalucía' by the Spanish tourism authority, Frigiliana also holds historical significance. El Fuerte, the hill dominating the village, was the site of the final, fierce defeat of the Moors of La Axarquía during their rebellion in 1569. The village is a labyrinth of narrow, cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses, their wrought-iron balconies brimming with vibrant red geraniums. Quaint plazas offer shaded seating, while local bars are a favorite among visitors.
