The city of Cadiz is located in the southern part of Spain on a peninsula that extends into the Bay of Cadiz, being nearly entirely encircled by water. Founded by the Phoenicians as Gadir around 1100 BC, Cadiz began as a trading post. It later came under the control of the Carthaginians and subsequently flourished as a Roman port. Although it fell into obscurity during the Visigoth and Moorish periods, it regained prominence in the early 16th century as a vital maritime hub for voyages to the newly discovered lands of America. 

Sir Francis Drake of England raided this crucial region in his efforts to dominate the trade route to the New World and famously withstood a fierce siege by Napoleon’s forces. 

In the early 19th century, Cadiz emerged as the epicenter and stronghold of Spain's anti-monarchist liberal movement, leading to the proclamation of Spain's first Constitution here in 1812.
