The city of Cadiz is located on a peninsula that extends into the bay of Cadiz, nearly enveloped by water on all sides. Founded around 1100 BC by the Phoenicians and known as Gadir, Cadiz originally served as a trading post. It was later taken over by the Carthaginians and eventually became a thriving Roman port. Although it fell into obscurity during the Visigoth and Moor periods, Cadiz regained its prominence in the early 16th century as a pivotal maritime hub for voyages to newly discovered lands in America.
Sir Francis Drake of England targeted this crucial region in the battle for dominance over the trade route to the New World, enduring a fierce siege laid by Napoleon's forces.
In the early 19th century, Cadiz emerged as the epicenter and stronghold of Spain's anti-monarchist liberal movement, leading to the proclamation of Spain's first Constitution here in 1812.
