Founded in 138 BC by the consul Decimus Junius Brutus, Valencia began as a military settlement for soldiers granted land in the newly established city. Archaeological excavations have unearthed remnants of the initial settlement, including the foundations of log cabins and tents, suggesting a temporary encampment that transitioned into more permanent structures within a few years. Valencia quickly flourished, even minting its own coins. However, the city faced destruction in 75 BC amid the conflict between Pompey and Sertorius, with discoveries at La Almoina revealing dismembered soldiers and their weaponry. Due to this conflict, the settlement appears to have been abandoned for nearly five centuries. In the middle of the first century, Valencia began to revitalize, fueled by the wealth of its inhabitants and the construction of substantial public edifices, including the amphitheater and the forum. Significant projects were undertaken, such as a river port and a water supply system, the latter of which Valencia would not utilize again until the mid-nineteenth century. The city was not immune to the broader crisis that plagued the Roman Empire in the latter half of the third century, resulting in a prolonged period of decline. By the mid-fourth century, Valencia had transformed into a Christian community.
