Seville boasts a rich and captivating history. For over six centuries, the Romans governed the entirety of Spain, transforming the landscape by erecting aqueducts and constructing straight roads that connected all the major towns. However, it was the Muslim invaders who left the most enduring mark on Seville. Their Dynasty dominated Andalusia for nearly 800 years, from 711 until 1492, when the Catholic monarchs ultimately vanquished the Muslim kingdom of Granada. Many of Seville’s most striking buildings stand as a testament to this era.
Following the fall of Granada, Spain entered a flourishing period of prosperity and expansion. The discovery of the New World catapulted Seville into one of the wealthiest cities in Europe. Yet, by the 18th century, Spain experienced economic turmoil, and during the 19th and early 20th centuries, widespread poverty led to political unrest and ultimately to civil war. Today, Seville serves as the capital of Andalusia and ranks among the most visited cities in Spain.
