The two-hour journey from Seville takes us through captivating countryside, leading to the distinctive village of Setenil de las Bodegas, named for its once-abundant wineries, sadly destroyed years ago by an insect plague.
Setenil stands out as an exceptionally unique village compared to the typical white villages of Andalusia. While most white villages are perched atop mountains and hills, this town is ingeniously built into the caves in the cliffs overlooking the river Trejo. Its brilliant white houses emerge dramatically from the rocks, making it one of the most remarkable villages in Andalusia.
We then continue on to Ronda, just a 20-minute drive away. Ronda is renowned as one of Spain's oldest towns, with roots tracing back to the Neolithic age, and many remnants from that era still visible today. Despite the throngs of tourists flocking to Ronda every year, particularly to its historic center, the town has managed to retain much of its original charm. It is famously recognized for the breathtaking views of the deep gorge known as El Tajo. Visitors are naturally drawn to the 18th-century Puente Nuevo, or 'New' bridge, which spans a stunning 100-meter drop.
The promenade encircling the gorge offers spectacular vistas of the Serranía de Ronda mountains. Ronda's intriguing history encompasses influences from both the Romans and the Moors, and it was among the last Moorish strongholds to succumb to the Spanish Conquistadors.
The town also boasts numerous impressive historical landmarks, drawing visitors from around the globe. Among the most significant is the Plaza de Toros, or Bullring. This particular bullring holds the title of the oldest bullfighting arena in all of Spain, recognized as the birthplace of bullfighting. Though it now operates as a museum, it still hosts bullfights during Ronda’s festive celebrations.
