Porto, originally a pre-Roman settlement known as Calle or Portus Cale, has records indicating its establishment in 417 AD. Over the centuries, it came under the dominion of various rulers, including the Suevi, Goths, and Moors.

Thanks to booming commercial activities, Porto experienced rapid growth, and by the 14th century, the ancient medieval walls were replaced by the new Ferdinand wall.

During the “Age of Discoveries,” both Portugal and Porto played pivotal roles in Europe. Porto emerged as a prominent trading port and, in the 15th century, became one of the foremost shipbuilding ports in the country.

The 17th century marked significant growth for Porto, largely driven by the burgeoning wine industry. This era was characterized by substantial development and remarkable artistic evolution, reaching its zenith in the 18th century.

Porto boasts a rich tradition of defending human civil rights. Its spirited populace withstood a protracted siege by royalist forces from 1832 to 1833. The sacrifices made by those rallying for the Constitutional Charter ultimately secured a victory for the Liberal cause.

Consequently, Porto is regarded as one of the most striking cities in northern Portugal and has earned the designation of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
