Nerja and the caves information

Nerja is situated along the stunning seashore, approximately 95 kilometers from Granada, marking the eastern edge of Málaga's Costa del Sol. Once merely a tranquil fishing village, this town has now grown to a population exceeding 22,000 residents.

At the heart of Nerja lies the breathtaking Balcón de Europa, known as the "Balcony of Europe." This magnificent promenade clings to the edge of a towering cliff, a historic site where a grand Moorish castle once stood, offering sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean as well as the charming coves and beaches below, all set against a captivating backdrop of soft blue mountains.

However, the most remarkable attraction in Nerja is undeniably its captivating caves, located just three kilometers from the town center. These caves house archaeological wonders, including paintings that are over 20,000 years old and various prehistoric remnants. One of the vast natural caverns has been transformed into a concert hall, hosting numerous performances during the summer months.

A mere seven kilometers north of Nerja lies the quintessential pueblo blanco of Frigiliana, perched high on a mountain ridge with breathtaking views of the sea. Recognized as the 'prettiest village in Andalucía' by the Spanish tourism authority, Frigiliana also holds significant historical value. El Fuerte, the hill rising above the village, witnessed the final and bloody defeat of the Moors of La Axarquía during their rebellion in 1569. The village features a maze of narrow cobbled streets flanked by whitewashed houses, their wrought-iron balconies adorned with vibrant red geraniums. Small plazas offer shaded seating, and the local bars are a favorite among visitors.
