Information about Mijas and Benalmadena

The picturesque village of Mijas is nestled in the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas Mountain range, embraced by lush pine forests. Perched at an altitude of 428 meters, it boasts a population of 7,500 residents. The nearest major town is the charming seaside resort of Fuengirola, located just 8 km away, while Malaga Airport is a mere 25-minute drive. Mijas has successfully preserved much of its quintessential "white village" charm, characterized by its narrow, winding cobblestone streets, brilliant whitewashed facades, and stunning panoramic views.

Evidence of habitation in Mijas dates back many centuries, supported by archaeological discoveries near the 'Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepcion.' This historic church, completed in the early 18th century, stands upon the ruins of a Moorish castle that existed from the 8th century until the late 15th century. Long before that, the Romans utilized Mijas, known then as ‘Tamisa’ or ‘Jamisa,’ as a vital commercial hub due to its strategic location along the trade route connecting Malaga and Cadiz.

Tucked away in a tranquil corner of the village, with a breathtaking view of the valley leading to the coast, lies the hermitage of the ‘Virgen de la Peña.’ Carved into a rocky outcrop by Mercedarian monks in 1520, it houses the image of the ‘Virgen de la Peña,’ the village's patron saint. According to legend, she miraculously appeared on June 2, 1586, to two young shepherds, guided by a pigeon. Later, the Virgin's image, hidden for 500 years, was discovered in a recess of the tower. Construction on the sanctuary cave commenced in 1656 and is now lovingly adorned with flowers and offerings.

In Mijas Pueblo, the village showcases typical Andalusian homes, gleaming white and perched on the hillside. Mijas offers an abundance of delightful experiences for the senses, captivating our sight and tantalizing our taste buds with its exquisite local cuisine.

Elevated 280 meters above sea level along the Mediterranean coastline, Benalmadena Pueblo is a highly sought-after tourist destination in the Malaga province. While the village boasts a substantial residential community, it has successfully maintained the ambiance of a tranquil, white Andalusian village. During the period of Arabic rule, the town was referred to as "Ben Almedana," which translates to "sons of the mines."
