We will explore the magnificent Alhambra palace and its enchanting courtyards, originally constructed for the last Moorish Emirs of Spain during the reign of the Nasrid dynasty.
Following the Christian reconquest by the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, in 1492, parts of the Alhambra were repurposed for the Christian monarchy.
In 1527, their grandson, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and ruler of much of Europe, commissioned the construction of a palace that was integrated into the Alhambra within the historic fortifications of the Nasrid Palaces.
However, for centuries, the Alhambra succumbed to neglect and suffered considerable damage during the incursions of Napoleon's troops. The site was rediscovered in the 19th century by European and American scholars and travelers, notably Washington Irving, who penned his renowned work, "Tales of the Alhambra" here.
Today, the Alhambra Palace stands as Spain's most visited tourist destination, showcasing the nation’s 700-year history of Moorish influence along with its most remarkable examples of Islamic architecture—truly the most impressive constructions beyond the Islamic world.
The Alhambra is also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has served as inspiration for countless songs, dances, and stories.
