Following the Christian reconquest in 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, portions of the Alhambra were reallocated by the Christian Monarchy.
In 1527, their grandson, Charles V—Holy Roman Emperor and ruler of a vast expanse of Europe—erected a palace within the Alhambra, situated amid the ancient fortifications of the Nasrid Palaces.
For many years afterward, the Alhambra fell into neglect and suffered considerable damage due to Napoleon's troops. Nonetheless, it was rediscovered in the 19th century by European and American scholars and travelers, notably Washington Irving, who wrote his acclaimed work "Tales of the Alhambra" during his stay there.
