Information about Cartagena

First settled in 223 BC by the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal the Fair, his invading army marched into the Iberian settlement of Mastia, which he renamed Qart Hadasht.

The town flourished under Roman rule, leading to the construction of an amphitheater that remained undiscovered until the 1980s. During the Muslim period, Cartagena became known as the independent emirate of Cartajena, only to be reconquered by the Spanish Christians in 1242.

The city suffered significant bombing and damage during the Spanish Civil War while serving as the principal naval harbor for the Republicans.

Today, Cartagena stands as a vibrant tourist hub.
