The Caminito Del Rey is located within the stunning Gorge Desfiladero de Los Gaitanes, where it narrows to just 10 meters in width and plunges 700 meters deep in certain sections. Known as ‘The King’s Little Pathway,’ Caminito Del Rey was originally designed as a walkway to facilitate access to reservoirs that supplied water for a hydroelectric plant. It was inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII, from whom it derives its name.
The initial pathway was notoriously treacherous, precariously anchored to the gorge's walls by metal rods. Over the course of the last century, however, it fell into disrepair and began to disintegrate. This deterioration rendered it extremely hazardous, leading to numerous fatalities and its eventual closure. Nevertheless, thrill-seekers continued to attempt to traverse or scale the structure.
Fortunately, a few years past, it underwent a comprehensive restoration, transforming it into a secure route and establishing it as one of the most breathtaking walks in the world.
