The Caminito Del Rey is nestled within the stunning Gorge Desfiladero de Los Gaitanes, where in some sections, it measures just 10 meters in width and plunges 700 meters deep. Translating to ‘The King’s Little Pathway,’ the Caminito Del Rey was originally constructed to serve as a walkway, allowing access to various reservoirs that supplied water for a hydroelectric plant. Its name stems from its inauguration by King Alfonso XIII.
Initially, the walkway was quite perilous, held up by metal rods driven into the gorge's walls. Over the last century, it fell into neglect and began to deteriorate, leading to an extremely hazardous path that resulted in numerous fatalities, prompting its closure. Despite this, many adventurous souls continued to attempt to navigate or climb it.
Fortunately, a few years ago, the walkway was fully restored and secured, transforming it into one of the most breathtaking walks in the world.
